Rule 4 — Know Your Supply Chain

As pet food giants Mars and Nestle Purina are finding out, it’s getting harder and harder to hide flaws in your supply chain.
The New York Times recently published a series of articles documenting human trafficking and inhumane labor conditions in the global fishing industry.
Now The Times reports a group of consumers have filed a class action lawsuit against Mars, claiming the company violated consumer protection laws by not fully disclosing its dependence on forced labor to supply fish for its cat foods. (Nestle Purina was sued earlier in the year.)
And federal lawmakers are piling on with proposed legislation addressing the issue. Ditto the State Department.
Only time will tell if the Mars and Nestle Purina brands will suffer as a result of all this, but no brand needs this kind of attention.
